fast.ai Review 2026: Practical Deep Learning for Coders

fast.ai has a distinctive philosophy: you should be training a real, working deep-learning model before you understand every equation behind it. For coders who learn by doing, that approach is a breath of fresh air — and the course is completely free.

What it is

Practical Deep Learning for Coders is fast.ai’s flagship course, taught by Jeremy Howard. It’s free, project-based, and paired with a free book. There’s no certificate — the deliverable is that you can actually build and deploy deep-learning models.

The top-down approach

Most courses build bottom-up: theory first, application eventually. fast.ai flips it. In the first lesson you train an image classifier that works. Then, across the course, you progressively unpack why it works — the architecture, the training loop, the maths.

For people who get bored or discouraged by weeks of theory before touching real code, this is far more motivating. You see results immediately, and the understanding follows.

Prerequisites
